Please Note (updated 3/17/2017): The government of the Republic of India announced the discontinuation of 500 and 1,000 rupee (INR) notes as legal tender, effective at midnight on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited the need to combat corruption and counterfeiting as the basis for eliminating India’s two largest currency notes. We have received further guidance from the Reserve Bank of India concerning the buying and selling of rupee (INR). Travelex, on behalf of BFSFCU, once again can buy rupees (INR) but is restricted to buying the new series banknotes only. Additionally, Travelex is restricted to selling only the New series banknotes in 500 and 2,000 denominations only (see examples below) with a limit of 25,000 (INR). In-person transactions at banks located in India appear be the most reliable way to exchange the discontinued notes at this time. The Credit Union will continue to post updates as the situation develops and more information is available.
Stop by the foreign currency ATM outside of our IMF HQ2 branch office to withdraw Euros, British Pounds, or Canadian Dollars.
