Please Note: The government of the Republic of India announced the discontinuation of 500 and 1,000 rupee (INR) notes as legal tender, effective at midnight on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited the need to combat corruption and counterfeiting as the basis for eliminating India’s two largest currency notes. Pending further direction from the Reserve Bank of India, Travelex, on behalf of BFSFCU is not able to exchange rupees of ANY denomination at this time. News outlets are reporting that banks in India will accept exchanges for 500 and 1,000 rupee notes until December 30, 2016. In-person transactions at banks located in India appear be the most reliable way to exchange the discontinued notes at this time. The Credit Union will post updates as the situation develops and more information is available.
