Maximize your Earnings on Savings
with a Certificate Laddering Strategy

Certificates are one of the safest investment options available. You receive the guaranteed dividend rate of return as long as you don’t withdraw funds before the certificates mature, and your funds are federally insured by the NCUA.* However, one strategy to get higher yields and sufficient access to your cash is through Certificate Laddering.

What is Certificate Laddering?

Laddering is an investment strategy to make your money work harder for you by allowing you to break your total investment into multiple smaller certificates with varied terms.

How Does Certificate Laddering Work?

Here is an example: You have $25,000 to invest. You open five certificates to your credit union— a 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 4-year, and 5-year term with $5,000 each. As each certificate matures and becomes available or “liquid”, you may reinvest it into the 5-year certificate for a higher rate. While a longer-term ladder strategy will earn you a higher rate, your money will also be tied up for a longer period of time.
