Personal Representatives

A personal representative, also referred to as an executor or administrator, is appointed by the probate court to serve within the jurisdiction where the decedent resided.

If the decedent was domiciled outside of the District of Columbia at the time of death, the appointed personal representative must submit the necessary documents to initiate a foreign estate proceeding in the District of Columbia. Only after this process is completed will they have the authority to collect and distribute any assets located within the District.

For further information regarding the probate requirements in the District of Columbia, please visit the DC Courts website linked below for your convenience:

Guidance on probate matters, including foreign estate proceedings, should be sought from competent counsel. BankFund does not provide tax, legal, or investment advice.
