W-9 FAQs
What is a U.S. person
for tax purposes?
According to the IRS, this includes US citizens, permanent residents (green card holders), and some individuals who meet what’s called the substantial presence test (a rule based on how much time an individual has spent in the US).
Does my W-9 ever
expire?
No. A valid W-9 does not expire. However, if your tax information or status changes (such as a name change, issuance of a U.S. TIN, change in tax classification, etc.), you may be required to submit a new tax certification.
Can I email my
form?
We do not recommend emailing the form. For your privacy and security, we accept uploads through the Secure Message Center in Digital Banking. If you do not have Digital Banking, let us help you enroll by contacting Member Services.
What happens if I don’t
submit a W-9?
If you don’t certify your taxpayer status, we may be required to apply backup withholding on certain income like dividends or interest.
